Now residing in the Valencia region for 21 years, I can say it was the best move we ever made. And this is coming from a New Yorker, who always believed NYC was the center of the universe. I enjoy reading your essays because they bring back the memories of when we first came over.

21 years! That’s incredible! I love this area so much, and I’m pretty sure I thought my part of the U.S. was the center of the universe. How wrong I was. 🤣 Thank you for reading. What a compliment that is. 🥹

Unfortunately, it's very American to think that wherever you live is the center of the universe. Many americans don't get far outside their bubble, and it's a big country..

I've been talking with other people about the idea of all American kids being given the opportunity to go to other countries to volunteer, to get a cultural experience outside of their bubble. I think it would really make a huge change in our area of the universe.

We've traveled quite a bit, but it really isn't the same at all as living in another country and walking in an immigrant's shoes. My husband and I have often said it would be good for every single person alive to have to do this once in their lives. I know that isn't realistic, but how much more empathetic would we all be to one another?

This is why I would love to see kids doing volunteering, because it would put them face to face with the reality of many in the world... And it would put them in a place long enough to go through that discomfort themselves of being the outsider.

I think it would be possible if there were some rich people out there who wanted to do a philanthropic organization to at least to get some kids that opportunity. The question is finding those people with the money. I'm gonna keep putting it out to the universe because by gosh our country needs it.
