I worked for Dave Ramsey for seven years and lived by his Baby Steps even longer. Then we stopped following them to the letter, and that shift is part of how I ended up in Spain.
Ah I thought this was going to be the financial guru you were talking about. I’ve always heard that DR is good to follow if you’re in debt but not once you’re out of debt. Glad you found a more livable system!
I was never a true Ramsey convert, but I did use the baby steps after my divorce to get myself out of debt and I'm still debt free ten years later so it served me well! And like you, it really paved the path for my move abroad. My dad tried to tell me all this when I was younger, but had to learn the hard way haha!
I'm glad you got some value out of the experience and that it paved your way to Spain -- and that you were able to move beyond baby steps aa you became more confident in your financial discernment..
I had friends in Austin who followed his envelope system, carrying around envelopes full of cash to organize their budget. That always seemed unwise to me, because what if you lose an envelope or the whole bag?
And I thought his car advice was terrible, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I was happy to have a predictable car payment and a service warranty rather than no car payment but unpredictable breakdowns and expenses.

I have so much I could say, but I really didn’t want to go down the road of bringing too much attention to it. 😬
Very fair! Yeah I’m sure after working there you’d have lots of stories.

The parents are usually right, unfortunately. 😅
